Background to Educational Leadership at UBC

Expressed succinctly, educational leadership may be thought of as impact beyond one’s own classroom.

Educational leadership is a key component of the role of faculty in the Professor of Teaching stream (also locally referred to as the Instructor or ‘educational leadership’ stream). The Professor of Teaching rank was introduced to UBC in 2010. This brought about changes to the Collective Agreement and changes to the descriptions of the existing ranks of Instructor and Senior Instructor. Promotion and tenure decisions for faculty members in the Professor of Teaching stream were based on contributions in teaching, service and educational leadership. The Senior Appointments Committee (SAC) guide to Tenure, Promotion and Reappointment contains details of educational leadership requirements and representative activities.

A number of other research intensive Universities have followed a similar path to establish a rank equivalent to full professor for teaching stream faculty, most notably U of T in 2015.
