Celebrate Learning Week turns the lens on those “aha” moments when theory becomes practice and ideas blossom into action. Now in its fifth year, the October 27 – November 4 celebration highlights and honours the work of faculty, students, and staff to create exceptional learning environments at UBC’s Vancouver campus.
“We’d like to encourage everyone to take advantage of this celebration to share innovative ideas and learn from each other so we can further enhance the educational experience of our students,” says Prof. Anna Kindler, Vice Provost and Associate Vice President Academic Affairs and Resources.
The week-long showcase includes open lectures, informational sessions, student advising activities, poster sessions, workshops, and more. All UBC Faculty and Departments are encouraged to participate in Celebrate Learning Week by either attending events and/or coordinating events. To include your events in the 2012 Celebrate Learning Week calendar, please submit your events via www.celebratelearning.ubc.ca by September 28.
CTLT is involved with several events during Celebrate Learning Week. Below are a few of the highlights.
Habits of Highly Effective Writers
Monday, October 29
Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, Seminar Room 2.22
1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
‘Publish or perish’ is the mantra of the successful academic. Yet few academics have been explicitly trained as writers, and fewer still have been schooled in the intricate art of maintaining research productivity without sacrificing work-life balance. Helen Sword, author of, “Stylish Academic Writing” (Harvard 2012), has interviewed more than 80 successful academics from across the disciplines to find out about their professional formation as writers, their daily work habits, and their habits of mind. In this interactive workshop, she will present a smorgasbord of evidence-based strategies for colleagues who aspire to write more confidently, stylishly, engagingly, daringly, or simply more prolifically. This session is for Faculty members or Post-Doctoral Fellows only. Read more about this event.
Peer Review of Teaching Forum
Tuesday, October 30
Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, Dodson Room 302
12:30 pm – 2:00 pm
Over the last two years, Faculties have been working with CTLT to develop their own faculty-specific plans for implementation of the formal peer review of teaching. This forum offers an opportunity to take stock and learn from best practices developed and deployed around the University. It will consist of input from a variety of stakeholders, including Faculty nominees who have developed plans for their area, the views of reviewers and reviewees, and discussion / interactive sessions designed to allow participants to contribute challenges and opportunities from their own subject areas. Spaces for Teaching, Spaces for Learning
Wednesday, October 31
Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, Victoria Learning Theatre 182
3:30 pm – 5:00 pm
This session will highlight some of the innovative teaching spaces around the campus, combined with exemplars from faculty who have made effective use of these spaces during their teaching. Additionally, we explore the student view of the variety of spaces that make for effective learning in physical, online, and informal spaces, on campus and beyond. Read more about this event.
Open UBC
Wednesday, October 31 – Thursday, November 1
Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, Lillooet Room 301
Events all day
UBC is once again participating in the International Open Access Week event, where the research and academic community worldwide come together to share and learn about open access, open education, and other connected global open scholarship initiatives that are taking place locally and across the world. UBC’s own event – Open UBC, formerly Open Access Week – includes discussion forums, lectures, seminars, workshops, and symposia on topical and timely issues from every discipline. All sessions are FREE and open to students, faculty, staff, schools, and the general public. Read more about this event.
Midterm Evaluations of Teaching Forum
Thursday, November 1
Abdul Ladha Science Student Centre
2:30 pm – 4:00 pm
This workshop will showcase a pilot project for the 2012-13 academic year, developed in partnership by the Alma Mater Society (AMS) and CTLT, to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of different models for midterm evaluations of teaching. This workshop will present examples of how mid-term formative evaluations of teaching are being implemented in various courses, to provide for a two-way dialogue and feedback between instructors and students during the course. Interactive Engagement in Large Classes: Methods and Examples from the Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative
Friday, November 2
Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, Victoria Learning Theatre 182
11:30 am – 1:00 pm
The Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative is a large-scale multi-year project at UBC, working with departments to identify what students should learn, measure what they actually are learning, and design, evaluate, and disseminate instructional approaches that improve student outcomes. Drawing on a selection of evidence-based practices, this workshop will offer a hands-on, interactive guide to some of the principles, practices, and effectiveness of active learning in large classes.
