**Please note that this is a face-to-face and virtual session for NEW FACULTY only**

UBC’s 2023 New Faculty Teaching Orientation is an important event designed to welcome and support new instructors as they navigate their roles and responsibilities at the institution. The orientation provides an opportunity for new faculty to learn about the academic culture, policies, and practices of the institution, as well as the resources available to support their teaching, research, and service. This event also presents a valuable opportunity to connect with new colleagues and foster professional networks.

This year’s guest speaker, Shannon Rooney, will explore the topics of stress and coping in your new role at UBC. Shannon will explore the importance of acknowledging and addressing stress proactively, as it can significantly impact your overall well-being and academic performance. Shannon will also share practical coping strategies tailored to our UBC community, including time management techniques, seeking support from campus resources, and fostering a healthy work-life balance. In addition, she will also touch on the academic demands, peer relationships, and extracurricular activities that can contribute to elevated stress levels among students. Shannon’s expertise and experience will be a valuable resource for new faculty members as they adjust to their new roles at UBC.

The session also includes a faculty panel, featuring three experienced instructors who will share their insights on navigating their way at UBC. This panel will be an excellent opportunity for new faculty members to connect with their peers, ask questions, and learn from experienced instructors.

Lastly, we will explore the UBC Faculty Primer, a useful webpage that describes the policies, procedures, and resources available to faculty members at the institution. This is a valuable resource for new faculty members as they navigate their roles and responsibilities at UBC.

Please ensure you have a smartphone or tablet to engage in the session activities.

A light lunch will be provided for those attending in-person from 12:00-12:30pm.
