Background to Educational Leadership at UBC

The Professor of Teaching rank was introduced to UBC in 2010. This brought about changes to the Collective Agreement and changes to the descriptions of the existing ranks of Instructor and Senior Instructor.

Unsurprisingly, educational leadership is a key component of the role of faculty in Educational Leadership Stream (in which the Professor of Teaching is the highest rank).

Expressed succinctly, educational leadership may be thought of as impact beyond one’s own classroom. The Senior Appointments Committee (SAC) guide to Tenure, Promotion and Reappointment contains details of educational leadership requirements and representative activities. The resources on this site provide addition guidance.

A number of other research intensive Universities have followed a similar path to establish a rank equivalent to full professor for teaching stream faculty, most notably the University of Toronto in 2015.
