Purpose of the Committee

In general terms, the 3M NTF Council members should be prepared to share their expertise and judgment to advise the University on matters of learning and teaching excellence. Specific roles of the committee include the following:

  1. To provide a forum for University of British Columbia 3M fellows to explore and engage in issues central to teaching and learning at UBC.
  2. To promote university-wide discussion regarding matters of teaching and learning priorities.
  3. To make recommendations to CTLT/ISoTL, as appropriate (and mindful of existing advisory boards for these units), on matters of supporting teaching and learning excellence.
  4. To provide input to the UBC President and Provost’s Office on matters of teaching and learning as requested and as the Council deems appropriate. For example, recommendations to the University’s Strategic Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Advisory Council; recommendations for the implementation of the new Professor of Teaching track during the critical first-five years (2011-2016).
  5. To support and/or mentor 3M National Teaching Fellowship nominees as requested.
  6. To engage in critical dialogue with one another about matters of teaching and learning, including:
    • sharing knowledge about UBC teaching and learning activities and priorities;
    • highlighting issues of concern expressed by Faculties/Units represented;
    • identifying opportunities for prioritization and collaboration.

Frequency of Meetings

It is recommended that one meeting be scheduled each semester and that the duration be 1-1.5 hours depending on the agenda. Special meetings may be called as needed.

Quorum: At least 60% of the 3M National Teaching Fellows currently employed at UBC need to be present (either virtually or in person) for any changes or decisions that require a vote. Retired, or emeritus 3M Fellows will be invited to attend.
