Lillooet Room 301, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre

Earlier this year, UBC launched the Flexible Learning Initiative with the goal of expanding the use of innovative technologies and teaching methods to improve student learning across the University. UBC has long been a leader and an innovator in this field, thanks to endeavors like the Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative, the Science Centre for Learning and Teaching (formerly called Skylight), and many other projects spearheaded by faculty members who are interested in this evolving field. After an initial call for proposals in June 2013, 41 projects are currently being supported through the Flexible Learning Initiative. They span themes such as the flipped classroom, the creation of open resources, students as co-producers of learning content, and community-based learning experiences for students. In total, 100 courses comprising approximately 34,000 student enrolments will be impacted over the duration of these projects. Join this interactive presentation to learn about how this first round of projects is progressing and what we’re learning as students and educators.
How Learning Works
Thursday, October 24
9:30am – 12:30pm
Dodson Room 302, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre
Register for the event
Michele DiPietro, co-author of How Learning Works, believes that “we owe our students a learning environment that fosters metacognitive awareness and a lifelong learning disposition.” Many UBC instructors have engaged in learning theory to develop learning activities that support the teaching values that DiPietro espouses. The University’s recently launched Flexible Learning Initiative and its strategic plan, Place and Promise, demonstrate UBC’s commitment to these values at an institutional level. Join CTLT and a panel of experienced instructors to explore some of the research-based principles that frame How Learning Works and ways to apply the current theory of how people learn to teaching practice. Participants will leave the session with a framework to consider when working through learning and course designs.
