Lightboard, a new learning technology at UBC, is free to use for all UBC faculty and staff.
Lightboard’s lecture-capture technology allows instructors to produce short video productions that include dynamic visual aids such as movie clips, graphics, and animations. Unlike other classroom boards, Lightboard gives instructors an opportunity to speak directly into the camera, while annotating presentation slides or drawing illustrations on an illuminated glass.
UBC faculty and staff are currently using Lightboard to record videos on a variety of subjects. The final recorded video can then be published and distributed on a course blog, wiki, or Connect site.
Ina Biermann, an instructor for English 321, recently tried out Lightboard in her January 2015 course. Here is what a student said about the use of Lightboard videos in the course:
“Thank you for posting the informative videos…I found them to be extremely helpful in clarification as it provided a better understanding of the material (compared to just reading the text)…I’m sure other students found this helpful as well. If possible it would be nice to see a few more videos throughout the course on challenging topics such as this one.”
A collaborative project between the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology and UBC IT, Lightboard is free to use for all UBC faculty and staff. For more information, to view video demonstrations, and to schedule your free studio recordings with Lightboard, please contact lecture.capture@ubc.ca or visit the Lightboard website.
