CTLT’s Ido Roll honoured with the President’s Staff Award in Leadership

Ido Roll, the Senior Manager, Research and Evaluation for UBC’s Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology, has been awarded with the President’s Staff Award in Leadership.

Chosen by UBC President Santa J. Ono and an advisory committee, the honourees are selected annually for their outstanding achievement and excellence within the UBC community.

The Leadership Award is presented to UBC staff who provide a sense of purpose, vision and mission for their colleagues, influencing others to build consensus around departmental and organizational objectives. They lead by example and demonstrate leadership by encouraging the advancement of others. They make UBC a better workplace and contribute to developing the leadership capacity and strengths of those around them.

“We are exceptionally proud of Ido’s work and his enthusiasm for innovative teaching and learning,” said Christina Hendricks, Academic Director of CTLT. “He is a well-respected colleague whose creativity and expertise in the scholarship of teaching and learning are invaluable to the university.”

Roll is actively engaged in a range of research topics across the university and is regarded by his academic peers as a visionary in learning analytics, his nomination said. His ability to problem solve complex challenges results in increased efficiency and more vibrant, improved teaching and learning experiences, and sustainable practices for the university.

He has transformed the Institute for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in unprecedented ways, to provide training to faculty from diverse disciplines and appointments, and offer substantial consultation and support for research.

His mentorship is critical to the professional and personal development of the community of scholars in the program. Roll’s leadership style breaks down barriers between students, faculty, disciplines and silos that exist within the university. Roll gets people talking, co-teaching and collaborating and, in the process, he brings a level of support, respect and mentorship helping everyone to succeed.

Roll inspires educators across campus to explore and develop their practice. His care, attentiveness and creative problem-solving skills make him an effective teacher and a compassionate mentor.

The President’s Staff Awards recognizes the vital role staff at UBC’s Vancouver campus plays in creating a globally influential university and those who provide an exceptional environment for learning, teaching and research.
