3M National Teaching Fellowship nominations open for 2023

By janice ho on October 8, 2021

The 3M National Teaching Fellowship is Canada’s most prestigious recognition of excellence in educational leadership and teaching at the post-secondary level. The award recognizes and rewards a faculty member who, in addition to being known for extraordinary teaching, is active in promoting exemplary teaching in others.

The Call for Nominations for 2023 is now open.

The Fellowship is open to any individual currently teaching at a Canadian university or college, regardless of discipline, program, level, or term of appointment.

The nomination process

UBC community members (administrators, faculty and staff) are encouraged to recognize our faculty for their excellence and commitment to teaching.

For details on the nomination process, see the overview of the 3M National Teaching Fellowship nomination on the Office of the Provost and Vice-President Academic (VPA) website. The 3M Fellowship material appears under the “External Teaching Awards” menu.

All nominees and nominating parties are asked to consult Dr. Simon Bates, Associate Provost Teaching & Learning, as soon as possible to advise of their interest and discuss the process: simon.bates@ubc.ca.

The internal UBC deadline to submit nomination packages to the Office of the Provost and Vice-President Academic is Friday, October 28, 2022. Following sign-off by the Provost, the package will be returned to the nominator, who must then submit it directly to the competition by November 15, 2022.

The CTLT can help

The nomination process is a significant undertaking, and the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) is available to support both nominating parties and nominees throughout the process. Contact Judy Chan, Senior Educational Consultant (judy.chan@ubc.ca) for one-on-one consultation in the following areas:

  • Understanding the nomination process
  • Drafting and compiling a nomination package
  • Identifying and articulating one’s contributions to the learning environment
  • Accessing sample dossiers and advice from recent UBC 3M National Teaching Fellows
  • Learning tips and considerations

Additional resources

The VPA and CTLT have held panel discussions where 3M National Teaching Fellows shared their experiences undergoing the nomination process. Access recordings of these sessions to hear valuable insights from the participants.

See the 2020 article and panel session recording and the 2019 article and panel session recording.
