What Bill C-32 Means to Educators: What Can We Do?

As the Canadian government continues to move significant changes to federal copyright law through Parliament, many questions remain about the shape of that legislation, including whether there will be a “fair dealing for education” clause, and what it will mean to researchers, teachers and learners. Martha Rans will briefly outline the status and implications of the new law, as well as offering thoughts on strategies to facilitate sharing such as Creative Commons licenses.

The Open Learning Initiative: Accelerated Learning Through Adaptive, Data-Driven Instructional Design

Guest Speakers: Dr. Joel Smith and Dr. Marsha Lovett, Carnegie Melon University.
The Open Learning Initiative at Carnegie Mellon University focuses on providing freely available, standalone course offerings in a range of discipline areas. These courses are developed in a team-based approach, bringing together faculty content experts, cognitive scientists, learning scientists, human-computer interaction specialists, formative assessment specialists, and programmers. A hallmark of the courses is that learners are provided carefully constructed feedback based on scientific design and scientific methodologies. This talk will present an overview of the Initiative, and then focus in on the approach taken through the lens of the OLI-Statistics course.

Distance and Blended Learning Showcase

The Distance and Blended Learning Showcase will be an opportunity for the UBC teaching and learning community to share and discuss ideas, experiences, challenges and best practices for an, “Exceptional Learning Environment.” During the showcase, participants will engage with colleagues in Peer-Assist Activities to discuss teaching and learning challenges. Peer-Assist Activities are similar to round table discussions that encourage thoughtful collaborative discussions.

Sessions will explore how learning spaces impact teaching and learning, innovative curricular approaches to sustainability and aboriginal engagement and the complexities that may arise in diverse and multicultural learning environments.

Canadian Soil Web Collaborative

Students, natural resource scientists, professionals and educators are invited to the official launch of the Virtual Soil Science Learning Resource. The online resources have been designed for post-secondary education by a group of Canadian soil scientists and multimedia experts.
