Where do you go to share ideas on problem-based learning, teaching portfolios, or course design? What if you wanted to plan an interdisciplinary collaboration, or embed sustainability into your teaching? Groups of faculty members, graduate students, and staff interested in specific aspects of teaching and learning meet regularly at CTLT through communities of practice (CoPs).
Communities of practice are groups whose members “share a passion for something they know how to do and who interact regularly to learn how to do it better” (Wenger, 2006). With meetings ranging from once per month to once per year, and with topics determined entirely by the practical needs and interests of participants, CoPs are emerging as an excellent way for hundreds of faculty, graduate students, staff, and other members of the UBC community to connect, learn, and share.
CTLT works with partners on campus to host the following communities of practice (CoPs):
• Course Design
• Instructional Design
• New/Junior Faculty
• Peer Review of Teaching
• Portfolio
• Problem Based Learning
• Sustainability Across the Curriculum
• TA Training
• Teaching and Learning for the Heart and Mind
• Qualitative Data Analysis
• Library Outreach and Engagement
• Interdisciplinary
• ISW (Instructional Skills Workshop) Alumni
Depending on the interests of members, communities may host presentations from various UBC departments, share ideas and problem-solve together, host guest speakers, collaborate on projects, or hold social/networking events. To join or start a community of practice, visit the communities of practice page or keep an eye on the CTLT events website.
